Hello,
My name is Emma Ribbens, and I started Studio Ludiek out of my belief that play is essential to society. Through Studio Ludiek, I aim to create a positive impact by helping various organizations make play more accessible.
ABOUT
As a product designer, I combined my education at LUCA School of Arts with studies in Child Culture Design in Sweden, This journey led to my research project, Nomadlab, where I conducted extensive fieldwork in refugee camps and discovered the critical importance of play for refugees children - and for all children, regardless of circumstance. I now want to further apply this knowledge and experience through Studio Ludiek to make play more accessible."
VISION & INSPIRATION
I believe play is intrinsic to being human. Just as it is vital for other mammals, play is essential for development and for becoming an active part of a society. My projects, spanning different cultures and socio-demographic contexts, have shown me that play is the universal language of children. From refugee camps in Lebanon to Australian school children everywhere play in remarkably similar ways. Play connects across language barriers.
However, obstacles like time, space, and circumstances can prevent play from emerging. Through field research and participatory design, I strive to identify and address these barriers, making play more accessible to all.
In my designs, I always search for the starting point for play. Rather than dictating how play should be, I try to create opportunities where imagination and creativity can unfold. It’s like the story of The Little Prince, where the prince asks the pilot to draw a sheep. None of the drawings are right until the pilot draws a box with three holes and says, “The sheep is inside.” To his amazement, the prince’s imagination comes to life. This metaphor inspires my approach to design - I aim to create the “box” that unfold endless possibilities for play and imagination.
PROJECTS & METHODS
Play can be the final outcome- translated into play objects, toys, or playgrounds, but can also serve as research method. Play invites curiosity, wonder, and intrinsic motivation to explore and learn. That’s why I love collaborating with diverse organizations—like cultural institutions, NGOs, governments, toy companies, .… I contribute across different stages of a project, from translating ideas into concepts, research en participatory design- and creating and building.
In my work, observation, participation and research are fundamental, as the drive for sustainability. Depending on the project, I strive for example to use re-used and eco-friendly materials,—a commitment that I continue to grow and refine. Nature is a source of inspiration for me, and I strongly believe in intertwining play and the nature.
Through Studio Ludiek, I have built a broad network of architects, designers, illustrators, landscape architects, play experts, and more. Depending on the project, I can assemble a diverse team to meet its unique needs. I’m also part of Constructlab, an international network of makers and designers.
If you have questions, ideas, or simply a sense of curiosity, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’d like to hear from you!
