In recent month, we had the privilege of designing an art object for the children’s psychiatric center in Pelt. The piece was envisioned not only to provide aesthetic value but also to enhance the space with opportunities for play and meaningful interaction. Although our design was ultimately not selected, we are proud of the result!
Our inspiration was drawn from the Japanese concept of Komorebi, which captures the interplay of light and shadow created by nature. It represents a harmony capable of evoking tranquility and sublime beauty. This essence of Komorebi was the foundation of our design.
Komorebi
A Proposal for the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Pelt
The resulting object offers both openness and a sense of safety for the children and families who visit the center. Rotating transparent panels create colorful light mosaics, inviting playful exploration and transformation. The design empowers children to adjust the panels based on their immediate needs, granting them agency in shaping their experience.
Interacting with the artwork serves as a grounding activity, bringing the viewer back to the present moment and offering an escape from internal thoughts. Even in moments of stillness, the piece remains vibrant, reflecting its surroundings and evolving with the changing seasons and times of the day.
