he Design Expertise Centre at Z33 – House for Contemporary Art, Design, and Architecture, took on the responsibility of publishing the inaugural issue of Ponton, a new design magazine. This initiative, a collaboration between Z33 and Designregio Kortrijk, aims to address the needs of designers within the Flemish design field.

Ponton is an artistic incubator where we inspire, motivate, and activate emerging designers by engaging them in intergenerational and interdisciplinary dialogues, inspiration, and processes. Through Ponton, we are developing an experimental publication platform, working with invited designers to explore the current needs within the design world.

The magazine is a space for dialogue, creation, reflection, and knowledge sharing. It utilizes diverse formats to engage with a wide audience interested in how the next generation envisions the future through the lens of design.

The physical edition of Ponton will debut in October at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven and We Are The Next Generation in Kortrijk, providing an opportunity to showcase the experimental work to an international audience.

A New Design Magazine Fostering Dialogue and Reflection in the Flemish Design Field

In collaboration with a panel of design professionals, a selection of notable designers and duos from the Flemish design scene were invited to contribute to this inaugural issue. I am honored to have been asked I to contribute to the magazine and engage in a dialogue through an article, exploring the evolving landscape of design.

“We often hear about the design landscape and how we need to navigate it. But what does it mean to inhabit a design(ed) landscape, and how does being a designer influence how we live and work?

In this reflective and lyrical piece, social and industrial designer Emma Ribbens takes us on a fraught yet necessary journey through the profession and her relationship to it. Using the analogy of a map and the landscape it describes, Emma invites us to question our position in the industry asking: How can we overcome our anxieties by situating ourselves”
